What is a cold brew coffee Machine?

I can already hear you asking, ‘wait, isn’t this just an iced coffee?’. Well, no, sorry. Iced coffee is just regular coffee cooled down with ice cubes. Cold brew is a whole other way of brewing coffee, to bring out the rich, chocolatey flavour of your coffee.

The best cold brew coffee machine draws out the coffee slowly and gently, without hot water, to give you a fuller flavoured coffee, without any of the bitterness.

So this isn’t about cold brew coffee vs hot coffee, it’s two completely different ways of drinking your beloved java, and two completely different ways of brewing it, both equally good.

Sometimes it’s too hot for hot coffee, and sometimes it’s too cold for cold brew coffee. In my opinion, you need both.

Types of the Cold Brew Coffee Maker

There are a couple of different ways to make cold brew coffee, so which is the best cold brew coffee system? It depends on your taste, so I’ll explain each for you now.

am image of the best cold brew coffee maker in action

Cold Drip Coffee Maker

Like your regular drip coffee machine, the cold drip coffee maker involves pouring water over coffee grounds until you’re left with a cup of coffee.

The best cold brew drip coffee maker takes anywhere from a few to 24 hours to make your coffee, but it’s so worth it. It’s easy, and the coffee is much less bitter and acidic than regular coffee.

It also lasts a long time, anywhere up to two weeks in your fridge. Simply measure out your coffee grounds, add cold water, leave it to drip and enjoy cold brew coffee every day for two weeks.

Immersion Cold Coffee Maker

Drip coffee can be weaker than regular coffee, and if your best cold brew coffee method means strong, rich coffee, then an immersion cold coffee maker could be your best option.

For me, this is the best cold coffee maker. The coffee grounds are immersed in water for 12-24 hours, then it’s strained till you’re left with smooth, strong coffee.

This coffee is best used as a concentrate, diluted with either milk or water, depending on your preference. It’s an easy method, and perfect for families who enjoy their cold coffees in different ways.

Features to look for

When looking for the best cold brew maker for you, there are a few features you should look out for.

Size

Cold coffee takes a while, anywhere up to 24 hours. So, you should think about how often you want to make it, how many people you’re making it for, and buy the correct size for your lifestyle.

If it’s just you, go for a smaller option. If your entire family can’t live without cold brew coffee, a larger model is better for you.

It’s definitely a good idea to check the size of your fridge too. Cold brew coffee is usually left in the fridge to brew, so make sure whichever model you get will fit in your fridge.

Material

This is more of a personal choice. Most cold brew coffee makers are made predominantly from either glass or plastic, with stainless steel accents.

Glass is more eco-friendly, and in my opinion, the better option, although maybe not as practical for those with young children. It’s also usually more expensive than plastic.

If you do go for the plastic route, make sure it’s BPA-free and safe for long term use.

Filters

Like most filter coffee machines, you have a choice of filter materials, either metal or paper. Again, this is completely a personal choice.

Paper filters can result in a cleaner tasting coffee, although they’re not reusable and can be messy.

Metal filters are better for the environment, with no waste. They can sometimes, however, affect the flavour of your coffee. On the upside, they’re so easy to clean and can usually be thrown in the dishwasher.

Portability

Where will you be using your cold brew coffee maker? Do you want to be able to take it to the office with you, or on holiday?

Think about what and where you’ll use it most. If you want to be able to take it places, look for a more portable option. If it will just live in your kitchen, this isn’t as big a consideration.

You could always think about buying one for your home and a travel version to carry with you.

FAQs

How long does cold brew coffee last?

Cold brew coffee can last up to two weeks in your fridge in a sealed container. It’s perfect for making ahead so you can grab a cup quickly each morning.

What is concentrated cold brew coffee?

Immersion style cold brew is usually more concentrated than other types. This means it should usually be diluted before you drink it, either with milk or water. You can even freeze it and make coffee ice cubes. There’s even recipes out there to make cocktails with concentrated cold brew.

How to drink cold brew coffee

This is a personal choice, obviously, but generally however you drink regular coffee. You can just drink it plain, or make lattes or even cocktails.

My favourites are just with milk in the morning, or with a little kahlua on a hot summer evening.
