What is a Nespresso Machine?

Any coffee lover will know that pod coffee machines have become hugely popular over the last ten years. A lot of this popularity is down to Nespresso, and the range of machines and flavours they offer. Making coffee has never been so easy.

The machines on offer range from cheap to high end, high quality machines, as you can see in my reviews. Recently Nespresso have collaborated with other well known brands to make machines that are compatible with Nespresso pods, meaning the range of options out there has exploded.

So what is the best Nespresso machine for coffee? Well, it depends on the type of coffee you like, the amount of effort you want to put in, and your budget. My reviews cover some of the best on the market at the moment, so have a read and make up your mind.

If you’re looking for other pod machines, take a look at our post on the best coffee pod machines.

Why Use a Nespresso Coffee Machine?

The best Nespresso pod machine for you is whichever works best for your life. For some, it’s the cheapest model, for some it’s the smallest model, and for some it’s the all singing, all dancing model. Some advantages and disadvantages are shown below.

Advantages

There heaps of great advantages to owning a Nespresso coffee machine over other brands and types of machine.

  • Huge range of fantastic flavours available
  • Lots of compatible pods including reusable and refillable options
  • Easy to use – usually just press one button and away you go!
  • Quick way to make coffee

Disadvantages

  • Single-use coffee pods aren’t great for the environment but luckily reusable options are now widely available.
  • Some people think that Nespresso pods are a little small.

Find the best reusable coffee pods here.

Features to Consider

Now that you’ve read my reviews, you should have more of an idea on what is the best Nespresso machine to buy. If you’re still confused, think about the below to help make your choice.

Price

Believe me, prices vary wildly in this area. You can spend as much or as little as you want to. Just remember, that a cheap Nespresso machine may not work how you want it to. The best budget Nespresso machine for you will balance your needs and taste against how much you want to spend.

I would recommend spending as much as possible for a high quality machine, especially if you’re using it as a replacement for barista coffee from a cafe. Use my reviews to help choose the best price Nespresso machine for you.

Water Tank Size

Think about who will be using your machine. Is it just you, or do you have a whole family full of coffee addicts? If the latter, you’ll want a larger water tank to avoid several refills each morning.

If your family can’t stand the stuff, and you only need to worry about yourself, then a smaller water tank will suffice.

Milk Frother

Do you love a milky coffee? Can’t function without your mid-morning flat white? Then you’ll need to think about getting a Nespresso machine with frother. Milk frothers either come separately, or built in.

The best Nespresso machine for cappuccino come with milk frothers, either electric or steam. Electric models heat the milk through induction, while steam models blow hot air into the milk to heat it. Both work well, although steam frothers are more authentic to barista style coffee.

Size/Footprint of Machine

A big thing to consider is the size of the machine compared to the size of your kitchen. The best Nespresso machine for home will fit perfectly on your counter top, without taking up all of your space.

Companies have started to realise that customers want their coffee machines to look good, as well as perform well. Maybe I’m biased as a coffee lover, but I think coffee machines nowadays are gorgeous, and if it’s gorgeous, why wouldn’t you want it out all the time? If you agree, but your kitchen is on the smaller side, then you’d be best looking for the smallest Nespresso machine you can.

Other Features to Look for

The above are the main features to consider, but there are a few other bits you should look out for:

  • Ease of use – some of these machines are more complicated than others although all of them take minimal learning.
  • Reusable/compostable pod compatibility
  • Will it make your favourite drink – there are so many different flavours on offer so be sure to check there is a beverage/espresso type you like before purchasing.

FAQs

How do you clean Nespresso machines?

Some Nespresso machines clean themselves, but not all. It is the water tank that needs cleaning most often, and this can usually just be thrown in the dishwasher.

Every so often, your machine will need descaling. This involves filling the water tank with a descaling product, then running this through the machine as if making a coffee.

Which is the most quiet Nespresso machine?

This really depends on the drinks you want to make. If you’re happy with an espresso, or plain americano, then an Essenza Mini is perfect. It’s quiet and easy to use.

If you prefer milky coffees that require a milk frother, then your machine is never going to be the quietest, although the Creatista gives it a good go. To say it froths the milk and pours a lovely espresso, it is very quiet. It even cleans itself after!

Which Nespresso machine pods can I use?

Most Nespresso machines use the original Nespresso pods, as well as cheaper versions and recyclable versions. Pods can be bought in Nespresso shops, or pretty much anywhere online. There are a couple of companies that have started to offer reusable pods, which you fill with your own coffee. These are a great option for eco-conscious customers.

As mentioned above, Vertuo machines use larger pods, which have a special bar code on the underside for the machines to read. These pods offer a larger range of options, but can only be used in dedicated Vertuo machines.
