Best Electric Moka Pot:DeLonghi Alicia Moka

Specifications

  • Material: Aluminium
  • Capacity: 3 and 6 cup
  • Dimensions (L x W x H): 18.5 x 12.2 x 23.5 cm

The DeLonghi Alicia Moka is a convenient and hassle-free way to brew a delicious cup of coffee without having to babysit it as it percolates. It features an automatic shut off switch that keeps it from boiling over or stewing too long.

Repeat after me, “I am better than a twice-microwaved cup of coffee.” You better believe it! The Keep Warm system of the DeLonghi Alicia Moka keeps it toasty for 30 min after it’s done brewing.  The bottom of the percolator has a cool touch base so that you don’t burn the table when you set it down (unfortunately I can speak from experience on how great a feature this is – don’t get me started on how much it costs to refinish a dining room table or desk!).

Another thing I like about the DeLonghi Alicia Moka is that it has a transparent top container so you can see your coffee brewing and when it reaches the desired brew strength.

  • Enough for two good cups of coffee

What is a Coffee Percolator

Percolators are a device used to brew coffee by cycling hot water through the coffee grounds with the use of gravity. They are, most commonly, placed directly onto the stovetop to heat although there are now electric coffee percolators available that come with their own way of heating the water.

A coffee percolator consists of a pot with a small chamber at the bottom which is placed closest to the heat source. A vertical tube leads from this chamber to the top of the percolator. Just below the upper end of this tube is a perforated chamber.

What is a Moka Pot?

Moka pots also cycle hot water through the coffee grounds but these use pressure not gravity. They are placed directly onto the stovetop to heat.

A moka pot consists of a bottom chamber for water which is placed closest to the heat source. On top of this sits a filter where the grounds sit and a vertical tube leads from this chamber to the top of the percolator where the coffee emerges.

How do You Use a Stovetop Coffee Maker?

There are two different kinds of percolators: gravity fed and pressure fed (moka pots). Here’s how you use them!

  • Pour water into the bottom chamber.
  • Add ground coffee to the filter basket (courser grind for percolators and medium-fine grind for Moka pots). Find the best coffee grinder here.
  • Place over the heat source until the water starts boiling.
  • Reduce heat and let it do its magic for about six minutes (six minutes is an average, you might want to let it go a bit longer or less depending on volume and taste preferences).
  • Remove from heat and pour yourself a piping hot cup of coffee!
  • Word to the wise: Don’t pour too deep or else grounds will come up through the filter and get into your cup.

Any percolator you buy is going to give you more specific instructions depending on the model but this is the gist of it!

What to Consider When Purchasing

Here are all of the features you should consider when looking to purchase the best coffee percolator or moka pot on the market:

Capacity

Make sure you are buying a coffee maker that is big enough for your needs! Do you need a one cup coffee percolator? A 9 cup coffee percolator?  They range in capacity so check that you are getting the right size for you or your family’s needs. Also remember that the cup number refers to smaller coffee cups, not giant mugs.

Material

Most are made from a few different materials ranging from stainless steel coffee percolators to aluminium or enamel coffee pot percolators. Make sure you read the product information so that you are getting the right one for the right environment. For instance, you need a specific material to work on induction stoves vs a gas one.

Portability

Think about where you are going to be using your coffee maker. Will you be mostly using it at home? At the office? Is portability important to you? The best camping coffee makers are light, portable, and durable. Small percolators and moka pots are obviously more suited for portability so if you need a percolator for camping or travelling look for a small and light one. If you will be using it mostly at home portability doesn’t matter as much.

Cleaning

Some are dishwasher safe and some are hand wash only – each brand is different. Some brands have loads of parts and some only have three. Make sure you don’t throw your coffee maker in the dishwasher before checking the product information because the heat can warp or crack the parts.

If you’are hand washing, use warm soapy water and softly dry with a towel or air dry in a rack. A dirty piece of kit will make your coffee taste awful so don’t skip this part!

FAQs

What coffee should you use in a percolator?

A good rule of thumb is a medium-fine grind for moka pots and medium coarse grind for gravity fed percolators. You can use any blend of coffee, but if you want that espresso bite I’d recommend an espresso or dark blend. Make sure you read the instructions that come with your percolator!

Is a moka pot a percolator?

Yes, it is. A moka pot is a pressure fed percolator. It brews espresso type coffee from bottom to top vs a gravity fed percolator that brews a stronger drip coffee from bottom to bottom. A moka pot’s boiler will push steam up through the grounds basket to make coffee in the top compartment. A gravity fed percolator will push steam up through the grounds and drip back through them to make coffee in the bottom compartment.

Should I buy a moka pot or a percolator?

Do you like a more concentrated, espresso inspired cup of coffee? I’d recommend a moka pot. If you are looking for a cup of coffee more like a french press I’d recommend a percolator. Percolators typically make more volume as well so they are better for larger crowds.
